UNB Ltd

Building bespoke websites for clients in PHP and the LAMP stack

  • Wordpress for typical small client sites. Magento for larger e-commerce sites
  • Typical development using PHP and MySQL on Apache on a Linux OS
  • Mixture of Digital Ocean VPSs for development and managed Wordpress hosting environments for deployment of client production sites
  • Git repositories held on BitBucket using Git also to deploy to live and dev sites

Wordpress development normally consists of bespoke development using Roots, which uses:

  • HTML5 Boilerplate, and Grunt as a task runner for JS and CSS minifying and linting
  • Built using Bootstrap for Responsive Web Design
  • Modern HTML5 and CSS3 web techniques using the latest web fonts

Using ASP.NET to build custom online benefit calculators.

Worked on various websites that had on average 6000 hits a day (and peaks of 140,000)

  • Calculator built using C# in ASP.NET Web Forms in Visual Studio 2008, 2010 and 2012 using .Net 3.5 and .Net 4
  • Modification and upgrade of the calculator to use more Javascript, JQuery and AJAX for a better user experience (replacing old code that used postbacks)
  • Used XML for storing customer specific configuration information
  • Used different code repository systems (as we upgraded through the different versions of .Net and Visual Studio); CVS, Team Foundation Server and Git

I also built a stand-alone offline version of the calculator using Winforms, SQL CE and ClickOnce for delivery to a customer whose employees did not always have internet access.

  • Worked on team that built “Ocean” custom trading software in a high pressure environment with colleagues across several continents and time zones
  • Ocean was built using.NET and C# in Visual Studio using WinForms. Used MS SQL Server backend
  • Worked on other various projects with different technologies; Java, Unix, CVS and other technologies in an international team
  • Experience of working with Development, Test, QA and Production Environments

Runshaw College

  • Worked with the IT team in an infrastructure upgrade project for the total migration from Novell Netware to Active Directory of the College network
  • Replaced over 2000 NT workstations to higher specification Windows XP machines (including setting up and installing software)
  • Involved in the wiring up of several network switches and building of Cisco racks
